Rice Paddy Art

Since 1993, the farmers of the Japanese village of Inakadate, in Aomori Prefecture, have been creating elaborate designs on rice paddy fields by intermixing a variety of rice strains to create large scale artworks. Each year these farmers plant rice of different color to create new artworks and they last all through the growing season until the time of harvest. Over the years they have made classical art pieces like Mona Lisa, and images of historical figures such as Napoleon, and Marilyn Monroe, as well as traditional Japanese icons and figures.

A blast of arctic air will bring frigid nights to the central United States and may cause damage to the winter wheat crop over the southern Plains this weekend.

Temperatures are projected to drop into the single digits to near zero Fahrenheit over parts of the northern Plains and the Upper Midwest this weekend.

Zombie Raccoons Terrorizing Ohio

The Washington Post sounds the alert for “Zombie Raccoons” in Ohio.  These raccoons act as if they had been taken over by alien creatures right out of Robert A. Heinlein’s 1951 science fiction masterpiece, “The Puppet Masters“.

Coggeshall thought something was wrong with the raccoon, since it was out in broad daylight. What came next confirmed that. As Coggeshall left his garage to try to shoo the animal away, the raccoon stood up on its hind feet and flashed its sharp, white teeth and pink gums. Saliva dripped from its mouth.

Suddenly, it collapsed into a comatose-like state, Coggeshall said. It soon awoke from its lethargy, walked around for a bit, then got back up on its hind feet again.

Gunshots and Explosions and Soda Cans, Oh My!

The Daily Caller reports that, “MSNBC Host Reporting On Youtube Active Shooter Confuses Soda Can Opening For Gunshots“.  The incident made for a most excellent Wizard of Oz, “Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!” moment, don’t you think?

A bizarre moment occurred during the network’s on-air coverage of the YouTube headquarters shooting when host Nicolle Wallace confused a soda pop can opening for potential gun shots.

That’s when the near-unmistakable sound of a soda can opening – for some reason, live on-air – could be heard on the MSNBC set.

“I think we just heard some gunshots,” Wallace reported. “Should we listen to that for a second, control room? Not gunshots? OK. They’ll tell us if there’s something we need to — to dip in and listen to.”
